How to be Parisian

How does one define Parisian style? Simple? Tailored? Effortless? Desaturated? Regardless of which specific definition, any of the above descriptions are like music to my ears. My recent trip to Paris coincided with Fashion Week, and whilst my main priority was to be shooting street style and model portraits, I wanted to fit in with those clear Parisian street style stars who were encompassed in style and individuality.

After observing the outfits of fashionistas arriving to shows, I've come to the conclusion that when it comes to Fashion Week, less is often more. The denim jean trend of today is highly apparent amongst arrivals to shows, many of whom pair the casual pant with a statement shoe, block coloured top, or a dressy blazer. This look is undoubtedly inspired by the Parisians, who have long been known to style simple but polished combinations of jeans, tailored trousers, light jackets, striped clothing, and the occasional beret, to name a few. Take model and muse Caroline de Maigret for example, who is renowned for her effortlessly fashionable French allure. She calls the most essential piece in her wardrobe a pair of blue jeans, highlighting the importance of essential pieces in continually defining style. The appeal of the Parisian girl is that she looks so effortless, and is not controlled by the trends of a particular season. Rather, she is influenced by the classic pieces of history.

I took inspiration from this idea in one of my outfits during my trip to Paris, feeling at ease with the top fashionistas surrounding me, but also with the renowned Parisian fashion culture. I styled my favourite pair of blue bell-bottom jeans with a plain black bodysuit, and used my blazer as the subtle statement piece of my look. I purchased it from Topshop a few months ago, as I knew it would be a piece in my wardrobe which I would long wear and which would continue to remain in style, just as those Parisian-girl pieces do. The beginning of October signalled the need for a new pair of boots for the cold seasons ahead, so I opted for these lovely leather, Gucci-style boots, again from Topshop (please excuse the dusty state of them here; prior to taking these photos, I'd been running around the Tuileries Gardens shooting arrivals to Elie Saab!). Alongside a little black bag in one hand and a flat white coffee in the other, I was in full French swing and ready to stroll the streets of Paris in harmony with the aura of Fashion Week.

During my trip to Paris I visited the beautiful Palais-Royal for the first time, which is now one of my favourite locations in the French capital, and where many of the photos below were taken. Complimented by beautiful botanical gardens and encircled with shops, restaurants and cafés, the entire location feels completely magnificent and elegant, yet also peaceful, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Louvre just minutes away. Café Kitsuné was a winner for me, offering a nice authentic coffee, served by nice people, in the nicest location. I also stumbled upon the most exquisite vintage store owned by Gabrielle Geppert, offering a tremendously stylish interior filled with old Chanel jackets and striking high fashion pieces! Both places are a must to visit if you're in Paris!
